Liberty and Slavery
Hear from writer James Baldwin, film director Milos Forman, and diplomat Sol Linowitz as they reflect on the Statue of Liberty and the meaning of liberty. Linowitz points to “what we still have to do to achieve the full promise of the Statue,” and James Baldwin reflects, “For a Black inhabitant of this country, the Statue of Liberty is simply a very bitter joke, meaning nothing for us.”
This video is part of a lesson plan titled The Statue of Liberty & Immigration.
