Ulysses S. Grant, Union general during the Civil War and president from 1869 to 1877, had several ties to Kentucky. Born in Ohio in 1822, he attended an academy in Maysville, Kentucky, when he was 14. He and his wife, Julia Dent, honeymooned in Louisville in 1848. And his wife and children lived with his parents in Covington, Kentucky, for a time while he served in the Civil War.
