Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention

In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and three other white women convened the first Women’s Rights Convention in the United States. They held the convention in Seneca Falls, New York, with the goal of advocating for women’s legal rights and their representation in government. At the convention, Stanton read a Declaration of Sentiments, a speech modeled on the Declaration of Independence, which included a very controversial demand at the time—the right to vote for women.
