Learn about Alain LeRoy Locke, the architect of the Harlem Renaissance, in this video from First Person: Classroom. A Black and gay philosopher, Locke was an avid supporter of the arts. His most famous work, The New Negro, published in 1925, helped to champion artists within the movement that would later be called the Harlem Renaissance. He argued that race is merely a social construct and helped support countless Black artists throughout his lifetime. Using video, discussion questions, teaching tips, primary source documents, and an activity, students learn about the life and impact of one of America’s most important thinkers.
