Dueling in Kentucky | Kentucky Studies

Dueling began in the Middle Ages among the nobility as a formal way of settling disputes between two men by having them fight with matched weapons, at first swords, and later, pistols. The disputes were often motivated by the desire for revenge over an insult to one’s honor. The custom continued in Europe and was brought to America, where it remained common until the Civil War.
