The 1913 Paterson Silk Strike | New Jersey: Then and Now

The growth of the silk industry was rapid after the Civil War. The Great Falls of Paterson, New Jersey provided the natural resources needed to power silk mills. As such, the industry rose in Paterson. But by 1910, the Paterson Broadsilk Manufacturer increased the work expectations of employees. Workers went on strike in 1913 with the help of the Industrial Workers of the World. This resource explores the background of the Paterson Silk Strike and its impact on the industry.  Students then compare this historical event in New Jersey to current events as they debate, take action and document.
