Number Operations: Classroom Practice | Math Instructional Strategies
Fractions, decimals and percents are all around us every day. From cooking to weather prediction, and from shopping to probability, adult learners need familiarity with these mathematical representations. Relevance is an important aspect of learning for adult students; connecting with the learners' lives is a powerful strategy to help them realize that there is purpose in their learning that applies to daily living. Concepts and skills that are taught abstractly or as processes are less apt to be retained and to be useful to the learner. Guided practice followed by small group or individual work to solve problems with real-world applications provides the relevance that adult learners need. One real-world application that most learners understand well is money. Since our monetary system is decimal-based, money provides an understandable example of the equivalencies among fractions, decimals, and percent.
