Geometry: Classroom Practice | Math Instructional Strategies

While it is important that learners have guidance during their initial practice efforts with a new concept, sharing and evaluating others' solutions can also be instructive to both the teacher and the other learners. Often, an instructor can discover where a learner's thinking process has gone awry. Learners can observe that there are sometimes several ways to solve a problem that result in the correct answer. Working in small groups and "reporting out" problem solutions is one strategy proven to increase understanding and retention. In situations where an individual learner may hesitate to ask a question, or may be confused about something, another's sharing of a similar puzzle can be helpful to learners and their instructor.
