Students will view and discuss segments of the video series Austin Revealed: Chicano Civil Rights in order to examine the experiences of Gilbert Rivera and the growth of a Brown Berets chapter in East Austin; identify the issues that led to the Austin Aqua Fest boat race protests and examine the tactics used by Chicanos to get the boat races shut down; and analyze the accomplishments of the Chicano movement and identify issues that remain to be solved. Finally, students will use the knowledge obtained from the videos and independently to trace the history of their selected Chicano organizations to the present day.
