Into the Field: Archaeology Field School Abroad | Mapping an Archaeology Site: Lesson Plan

Your students will perform an interesting hands-on activity in which they will use measurements and a coordinate system to document a staged excavation site. They will also view the documentary, Into the Field, to learn about the Chavin de Huantar archaeology site in Peru in which archeologists use a coordinate system, referencing a single point, to get an exact location for the material excavated. Detailed maps and notes are also produced for each excavation site to document the findings.

Into the Field is a documentary that examines the modern methods of archaeology, anthropology, and paleontology. Filmmakers documented the work of University of South Dakota archaeology students, professors & professional archaeologists at Chavin De Huantar in Peru.
