Maya cities flourished from 100-900 CE, a time twice as long as the golden age of Rome. Maya Empire astrological knowledge was unmatched for 1000 years, until the time of Galileo. The sun regulated many aspects of Mayan life, and determined the conception and alignment of buildings. Uxmal, a major Mayan city, was built along a common north-south grid. But one of its most important buildings, the Governor's Palace, was built 15 degrees off center. Why? Art historian Mary Miller discovered a possible reason.
