The Benin - Portuguese Encounter | Civilizations

This video clip from PBS’ Civilizations presents a 15th century encounter between the West African kingdom of Benin and Portugal. The magnificent bronze and ivory sculptures of Benin and the painting The King’s Fountain stand as evidence of encounters that occurred in a spirit of mutual respect and commerce, not maliciousness or competition. The arrival of the Portuguese in Benin brought a boom in bronze making that enriched both societies, and beyond being artists the Beninese casters were historians, recording the great events and encounters of the time. The King’s Fountain is an especially notable historical artifact because it captures the diverse exchange of goods and ideas that defined the time. Atfer watching the segment, students should be able to answer the post-viewing questions in the support materials below and will be prepared to engage in a discussion about the influence of these encounters on both cultures.
