Wrought Iron Manacle, c. 1864 | A State Divided

Iron manacles were used on the hands and feet of prisoners. This one was used when four rebel prisoners were killed after the murder of a Union man. None of the prisoners had anything to do with the murder. More than 50 prisoners were killed as part of Order Number 59. It said that prisoners of war could be killed as revenge for the murder of Union citizens. People on both sides of the war were angry about this order.
