Suitcase, c. 1870 | A State Divided

This suitcase is made of two sections of carpet sewn together. This kind of suitcase was called a “carpet bag.” After the Civil War, many Northerners moved to the South. People from the South called them “carpetbaggers,” because they carried bags like this one. Southerners thought the Northerners were there to take advantage of the land and people.
