The Medal of Honor is the highest military award of the United States government. Confederates planned to have their own version of the Medal of Honor. But, it was never made due to metal shortages in the South. Instead, they created an honor roll. After the war, the United Daughters of the Confederacy had crosses like this one made. Veterans or their family members could apply for a medal. Thousands of them were given out until the mid-1930s.
