Archaeology and Artifacts in Nevada: Winnemucca Lake | Wild Nevada

Nevada has a unique geographical history, in that most of the Great Basin was under water at one time. Winnemucca Lake’s shoreline was home to the Lovelock Culture about 1,000-4,000 years ago. The lake itself is what remains from the ancient Lake Lahonton which covered a large portion of Nevada about 13,000 years ago. The concept of time is difficult to grasp, especially when talking about thousands of years ago. The idea of ancient cultures can be enlarged for students as they analyze images, videos, and text.

Learning Objective(s):

  • Students will analyze artifacts of ancient Nevada cultures.
  • Students will complete the Analyze an Artifact activity sheet.
