Needle Case, c. 1863 | A State Divided

Souvenirs can give us a special connection to the past. People who lived through the Civil War often saved items from important events. This needle case holds a piece of a coat worn by a popular Confederate general, Thomas J."Stonewall" Jackson. Jackson was badly injured during the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863 and died later at a nearby farm. The family who lived there saved this piece of his coat.
