Main Street While Morgan Was Expected, c. 1864 | A State Divided

This pencil drawing was made around the time that the Confederate John Hunt Morgan began one of his series of raids in Kentucky. Raids were terrifying to civilians because their towns and homes were not safe. Raiders would steal clothing, food, guns, and horses from townspeople. Sometimes they robbed banks and businesses and burned crops and buildings. The scene in this drawing shows the panic and fear that citizens felt when they heard that Morgan and his men were coming.
