Hospital Cot, c. 1863 | A State Divided

This Civil War cot or hospital bed is made of a cotton canvas nailed to a folding wooden frame. It would have been used in a field hospital, set up near a battle for wounded and dying soldiers. Folding cots like this one were strong, light, and easy to move. Cots were more comfortable for patients and cleaner than lying on mats on the ground.
