This dress belonged to Ellen Mary Rhea Byrne, who lived in Russellville, Kentucky. The dress had been her mother's dress first. She probably had to wear her mother's dress because the Union kept new products from getting to the South. Trains and boats carrying weapons, food, medicine and other goods were blocked.
