Columbus Depot Jacket, c. 1863 | A State Divided

This is a Confederate uniform shell jacket. It is made of brown wool jean cloth. At the beginning of the Civil War, Kentucky was a neutral state. Later, Kentucky joined the Union. Kentuckians fighting for the South were not given uniforms from the state. Many of them wore homemade uniforms or their own clothes. They dressed this way until the Confederacy made uniform clothing like this jacket.
