Cane, 1862 | A State Divided

This cane belonged to William Quarles Emison. He was a Confederate soldier who made the cane in Ohio's Camp Chase prison. Officers there were treated very well. They were allowed to stay at nice hotels; receive gifts of money, food, and clothing from visitors; and even attend sessions of the state senate. This was not always the case for prisoners of the Civil War. Some were treated very cruelly.
