Many Native American tribes gave up land to the U.S. government during the 1800s. There were 18 separate treaties between 1825 and 1892 in Nebraska alone. By the time the Homestead Act was passed in 1862, most of the Nebraska Plains that had been promised to Native Americans for decades (and been their homes for centuries) was being sold off to homesteaders and railroad companies.
