Variegated Fritillary Butterfly | KET Image Bank

This larvae and chrysalis will become one of the more common butterflies in North America, the variegated fritillary (Euptoieta claudia). The adult butterfly will be a muted orange with black markings on the wings. Butterflies often have very vivid markings in the larvae and chrysalis stages and the variegated fritillary is no exception in that regard. The stark black and red markings of the caterpillar are striking, as are the copper and black and cream marble patterns on the chrysalis.
