Lost In Transmission

In this lesson, students learn about energy lost to heat during transmission over power lines, starting with a 4-minute stop animation video that explains the concept of energy loss on the power grid. Students will explore the concept of energy in terms of electricity, kinetic energy, and heat. They’ll understand that energy can change forms (transform) and move location (transfer) but that energy is ultimately conserved. The lesson will help teachers connect the physics concept of energy to real world cases and problems. Students can then apply an understanding of energy concepts to design a project that answers questions about energy use/loss in their own lives.
