In this interview, 2014 MacArthur Fellow Mary L. Bonauto, discusses her career as a civil rights lawyer and her work as the Civil Rights Project Director at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD). Much of Bonuto’s work has focused on breaking down legal barriers based on sexual orientation. Her case—Gill v. Office of Personnel Management—provided the first federal court wins in challenges to federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and served as a model for the landmark case that ultimately resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court striking down DOMA in 2013.
