The Freedman's Bureau School | Genealogy Roadshow

In 1865, in an effort to restore order after the Civil War, the War Department established the Freedman's Bureau, an agency that was responsible for relief services and aid for newly-freed slaves. By the end of 1865, more than 90,000 former slaves were enrolled as students in Freedman Bureau schools.
