Brood Parasitism in Greater Honeyguides: Surviving by Deceiving
This video from NATURE’s Natural Born Hustlers III shows how greater honeyguides, a type of bird in sub-Saharan Africa, deceives other birds to secure the survival of future generations of their species. The honeyguide is an example of a brood parasite, relying on others to incubate and rear their offspring. Once hatched, the honeyguide chicks often take extreme and violent measures to reduce their individual competition and survive.
Additional discussion questions and vocabulary are include with this resource to expand students’ knowledge and understanding of these parasitic relationships.
