The Impact of the Freedom Summer of 1964 | Iowans Return to Freedom Summer
Explore how the grassroots movement of Freedom Summer brought about the Federal Voting Rights Act of 1965 in this video adapted from the documentary Iowans Return to Freedom Summer produced by the Keeping History Alive Foundation. Educational resources created and published by Iowa PBS. In order to sue for their right to vote, Black voters in the south had to prove that they were being denied that right. Freedom Summer volunteers worked to raise awareness of Southern voter rights infractions and demonstrate that it was possible to make positive change in a rural Mississippi community that didn’t believe such change was possible.
