When First Families are asked what they will miss most about The White House, they all respond with the same answer: The Resident Staff. This group of one hundred people includes the bevy of cooks, groundskeepers, butlers, ushers, and carpenters who keep the White House running day-to-day. The Resident Staff, many of whom pass down jobs to family members, has a unique view on history unfolding at The White House and has evolved over the years. In early years, Presidents brought their slaves. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many African Americans thought of jobs at the White House as prized positions.
