Eileen Collins was born in Elmira, NY. Upon graduating from Syracuse University, she joined the U.S. Air Force and logged over 6,751 flight hours in 30 different types of aircraft. In 1990, NASA selected her for the astronaut program. She retired from NASA in 2006 having logged 872 hours in space.
