NOVA: Make a Cloud Chamber

Learn how to reveal subatomic particles at home, in this video from NOVA Digital. It is possible to see the movement of subatomic particles, such as muons and electrons, by making a cloud chamber out of a jar, a sponge, rubbing alcohol, a flashlight, a black marker, and dry ice. The sponge is placed at the bottom of the jar and soaked with alcohol. After the jar is sealed and placed upside down on dry ice, the inside of the jar becomes supersaturated with alcohol vapor. Any disturbance inside the jar causes the vapor to condense into a cloud of liquid droplets. When a subatomic particles passes through the jar, it is revealed as a line of small droplets.
