Meet food technologist Tom Yang in this video profile from NOVA’s “The Secret Life of Scientists & Engineers.” Tom designs and makes food rations for the U.S. Army. During Desert Storm, he was faced with the challenge of designing a version of one of the soldiers’ favorite ration items—M&M’s—that could resist melting in the extreme heat of the desert.
