"Solemn and Peaceful Entry of the Army of the Three Guarantees into Mexico City on September 27, 1821," Painting

In this anonymously submitted 1821 painting, Mexican general Augustin Cosme Damián de Iturbide y Arámburu rides through a ceremonial arch to welcoming officials in Mexico City on September 27, 1821 after decisively winning independence for Mexico. The general is at the head of the Army of the Three Guarantees, a coalition force organized to show the strength of the Mexican intent for independence. Behind de Iturbide is an army of coalition force organized as a show of might, which is welcomed by the jubilant residents who had erected triumph arches and painted houses and themselves in the red, white and green colors of the army. Mexican independence was declared the next day. The painting is currently held in the Museo Nacional de Historia (National History Museum), Castillo de Chapultepec, Mexico.
