The Many Personalities of Salt Marsh Cordgrass | In the Grass, On the Reef

Blue crabs are a tasty treat for humans and sea turtles alike. Like many other commercially fished species, blue crabs are often found in and around coastal salt marshes, where they find shelter and meals of their own. But what makes these marshes so healthy, especially when marsh habitat is being lost around the world? Dr. Randall Hughes examines whether having a greater diversity of genetically distinct plants (genotypes) makes for a healthier marsh (and by extension, better fishing). Students will see how salt marshes play a large role in keeping coastal fisheries healthy and how diversity may allow for a stronger ecosystem.
