The Washington Monument | The National Mall - America's Front Yard
The construction of the Washington Monument, modeled on an ancient obelisk of Athens, suffered setbacks and delays including the loss of private funding and approaching civil war. Construction on the monument halted six years after it commenced because the project ran out of money. Other monuments also suffered similar fates, including the dome of the U.S. Capitol. President Abraham Lincoln fought to keep construction of the dome on the Capitol Building going as a message that the Union would survive.
