Champa the Moonbear | Operation Wild

Discover how veterinarians can now attempt ground-breaking surgery even in remote parts of the world. Laos, in Southeast Asia, is home to a unique species of bear that's only found in Asia: the moonbear. At the Tat Kuang Si moonbear sanctuary, a moonbear named Champa has hydrocephalus, a brain condition which also effects people and results in constant pain due to a buildup of cerebral fluids. Veterinarian Romain Pizzi, a specialist in keyhole surgery on animals, attempts groundbreaking brain surgery on Champa. He implants a tube that runs from Champa's brain to her abdomen, but operating out in the jungle isn't easy.
