The Horseless Carriage (Activity Five) | Horatio's Drive
Students will identify features that make an automobile practical for a cross-country trip and then design a 1903 era auto using lessons learned from Horatio's journey. Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson accepted a gentleman's bet in 1903 and drove from San Francisco to New York City in a Winton touring car. On the centennial of Jackson's achievement, Ken Burns and Florentine Films made a documentary film that follows his historic - and hilarious - journey. Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip is a one-episode, two-hour film.
