The Boston Massacre
Engraved after the painting by Alonzo Chappel, this image portrays the clash, now known as "The Boston Massacre," between the British Army and Boston civilians that occurred on March 5, 1770. Amid ongoing tensions between soldiers and civilians, a mob formed around a British soldier. Eight other British soldiers came to his support, and they were attacked with objects and verbal harassment. The soldiers fired into the crowd without orders and killed five civilians and injured six others.
