Since the 18th century, the Ribera (shore) of the Bayamón River, in the Barrio (neighborhood) Hato Tejas served as the site of the first sugar factories and mills in the Puerto Rican sugar cane industry.  In addition, it was one of the first settlements of immigrants coming from the Canary Islands, soon turning into a community of free slaves who contributed to the economic development of the Barrio Hato Tejas.
