American Experience | The Greely Expedition - Photo Gallery: Images from the Arctic
Sergeant George Rice was the official photographer on the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition to the Arctic, 1881–1883. In this set of photographs presented by American Experience, you can see the harsh weather conditions experienced by the group of twenty-five on their trip. The expedition was led by Lt. Adolphus Greely and is also known as the Greely expedition. Their mission was to establish a meteorological observation station, collect astronomical data, and polar magnetic data.
