Secrets of Selfridges: Part 1

In this segment of Secrets of Selfridges, learn about Selfridges, a London department store built by an American maverick, Harry Gordon Selfridge. Founded in 1909, it has become an icon of the capital and holds thirteen acres of retail space. However, while the modern store is a commercial success story, Selfridges' significance goes far beyond commercial success. The store helped change British society by liberating women, shattering class divisions, and reinventing shopping. The clip reveals Harry Selfridge's personal background, which has been pieced together through various historical documents. Quickly rising through the ranks at Chicago's Marshall Fields, Selfridge moved to London to provide the city with the department store they were missing.
