Red Metal: Chapter 3

In this third segment of Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913, learn about the strategies that unionized copper miners employed as they carried out a nine-month long strike and the mining company’s response, which included replacement workers and strikebreakers. This segment includes archival footage of striking workers, and also addresses the Italian Hall disaster, in which 73 women and children were killed when strikebreakers falsely yelled “Fire!” in a crowded meeting hall on Christmas Eve. This event brought national attention to the ongoing strike, and helped bolster support for labor regulations in the early 20th century.
