Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913 explores an epic nine-month labor strike at the copper mines of Calumet and Hecla in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It traces the strike from start to finish, examining the radical labor movement, progressive politics, and issues surrounding immigrant workers, as well as the Italian Hall disaster, in which 73 women and children were killed when strikebreakers falsely yelled “Fire!” in a crowded meeting hall—an event memorialized in Woody Guthrie’s 1941 folk ballad “1913 Massacre.” While ultimately unsuccessful, the strike had important implications for labor regulation in the early 20th century.
