Woody Guthrie wrote “1913 Massacre” after reading about the 1913 strike in the Calumet & Hecla copper mine in Calumet, Michigan, and the Christmastime tragedy at the town’s Italian Hall. Though Guthrie made no attempt to conceal his pro-labor bias and got several facts wrong, this song became a standard in the folk canon, and gives students the opportunity to explore the relationship between art and history.
