Red Metal: Woody Guthrie's "1913 Massacre"

In this clip from Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913, watch musician Steve Earle perform Woody Guthrie’s 1941 song entitled “1913 Massacre,” and consider how this depiction of the Italian Hall tragedy differs from reality. Woody Guthrie wrote “1913 Massacre” after reading about the 1913 strike in the Calumet & Hecla copper mine in Calumet, Michigan, and the Christmastime tragedy at the town’s Italian Hall. Though Guthrie made no attempt to conceal his pro-labor bias and got several facts wrong, this song became a standard in the folk canon, and gives students the opportunity to explore the relationship between art and history.
