Working for the government, a cadre of photographers, including Arthur Rothstein and Dorothea Lange, sough to document the hardships Americans suffered during the Depression. This annotated photograph of a steer skull from A Biography of America -- Rothstein's "The bleached skull of a steer on the dry sun-baked earth of the South Dakota Badlands," from May 1936 -- lets you examine why such Depression-era photography generated enormous controversy at the time.
