Lewis & Clark's Expedition to the Complex West
This activity calls students to analyze primary sources demonstrating the policies and practices the United States followed as it absorbed the Spanish, French, British, and Indigenous American populations of the Louisiana Purchase into its rule. The United States purchased this Territory--more than 800,000 square miles of land-- from France for $15 million in 1803, doubling the size of the country. President Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore it 1804.
