Walking the Solar System

In this video segment from Teaching Earth and Space Science, teacher Mark Goldner works with his eighth-grade students to visualize the enormous spatial scale of the solar system. He takes the class outdoors and creates a model where 1 inch equals 100,000 miles. He assigns a planet to each student to give them a sense of ownership and then has the class walk together and count paces to estimate the location of each planet in the model. This activity allows Goldner to make large-scale phenomena more tangible to his students.
