Sickle vs. Normal Cell

Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease that produces abnormal hemoglobin molecules. This causes red blood cells to assume a sickle shape. Compare the shapes of normal cells with disease cells in this composite image. The larger image, from the University of Utah, is of normal red blood cells. The inset, from the Virginia Medical College, is of sickled red blood cells.
