GIS to Monitor Areas of Conflict | Geospatial Revolution
The Geospatial Revolution Project, from WPSU Penn State public broadcasting, shows the ways in which the U.S. military is using GIS is to monitor its war zones with a focus on the human aspects of military strategy.
Geospatial technologies have been used to monitor the man-made as well as natural environment for several decades now. This clip from Geospatial Revolution highlights the way in which the US military uses geospatial technology to map military strategy. Geospatial technologies allow soldiers to consider the human sides of the areas they are entering, such as languages spoken, education levels of citizens, and location of national and international treasures. The technology also helps identify Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in a given location using satellite imagery that is supported by mathematical models to predict the locations and timings of IED placement and explosions, potentially saving the lives of soldiers and civilians. The predictive and preventative nature of this mapping and models can have far reaching consequences on the peace and security of a region.
